This looks pretty good for the month of November. The averages are pretty stable throughout the month.

The average page load times from our US based testing servers was 389 ms. This is very good considering it includes loading the main page of this blog for 24 of those days. HostGator’s network is pretty solid!

November test results for HostGator are in! Be sure to take a look at our testing procedures post we made earlier that points out some changes we made to our testing procedures.

As you can see the changes made on the 24th caused a drop in the graphs. Sorry about that. This will all be balanced out in next months statistics.

Even though the results are a mixed blend of main page loading and out newer test 10K page, we thought it would still be good to post the stats for everyone to review.

HostGator’s average full page load times was 1,045 ms from servers located outside of the United States.

I decided around the 24th of November that the way I was testing speed on each blog was inaccurate.

Therefore as of November 24th, we changed the way we are testing each host.

Fixed Page Size Testing

Now we are testing using a fixed size HTML file with 10k worth of text, or exactly 10,251 bytes. This same document is put on all servers we are testing.

Previously we were testing using the blog’s main index page which changes every day for each host and therefore not controlled or set fixed size.

In the results we post for November, you will see a sharp drop in ping / page load response times because of this switch. Now that the test page is only 10k in size, the response times sharply improved for each host.

If you want a more accurate result set, compare each screenshot test times after the 24th of November.

Faster Ping Resolution

Now that we are using a fixed page size, we could increase the resolution to get better results with our uptime reports. Previously we were testing using a 5 minute resolution, now we are using a 1 minute resolution. This will give us a better uptime percentage reporting for each host. Now if a host is down for a few seconds, we won’t report it as a 5 minute outage but will report it as a 1 minute outage. Still not completely accurate but it is a huge improvement.

In December, all days will have these new methods in place and will be a much more accurate result set.

Keep in mind, we only sent pings every five minutes to each website. Therefore, if we found an outage and it really only lasted 20 seconds, we will still show a 5 minute outage. For this reason, the actual uptime percentage is lower than what we really experienced. Starting in December, we changed the ping times to 1 minute and we are testing using a controlled 10K page as well for better equality.

As you can see there were five days in which there were problems with server outages and reliability. Let’s take a closer look:

October 9th: 5 minutes
October 12th, 5 minutes
October 23rd, 5 minutes
October 25th, 25 minutes
October 30th, 35 minutes

First, we need to keep in mind we only send page load requests every 5 minutes. So if the server was only down for 30 seconds, we will report the problem as 5 minutes. We could change the server pings to 1 minute but it would overload the shared server we are on and use too many resources.

We are considering having a blank loader page used as the testing page. This would require a very small page to load for accuracy and would remove the demand for Wordpress to load the page every minute. We might consider this for our December reporting forward. Not sure yet.

Either way, we can guarantee our server was offline for at least 20 minutes on October 25th, and 30 minutes on October 30th. Either way, we are satisfied with the outage times in total for the month of October, 2007.

Overall, we grade HostGator an A- for server uptimes.

Ginally, lets combine our results into one complete average.

Lets take a look at the daily statistics for HostGator.

In total, the average response time from all global servers we have all over the world, we saw an average page load time of 741 ms.  We are used to receiving 1,000+ ms for this report, so obviously this has a lot to do with our website being new and the main page having very few text.

But overall, 741 ms is excellent. We rate HostGator an A+.

We’re hoping the downtime experienced on the 30th was a fluke. We’ll see next month!
